Hi, I’m Max, a solo indie developer from Germany. I quit my day job a few years ago to follow my childhood dream of making games. I converted an old ambulance into my living and workspace, which I call “The Gaming Van.” During the summers, I worked on my first commercial game, “Legends of Dionysos,” in nature.
Inspiration and Concept
What inspired you to create Legends of Dionysos, and how did you come up with the concept of blending RPG elements with fast-paced gameplay in a 2.5D environment?
Since I was a kid, I dreamed of a game that blends RPG elements with fast-paced action. I grew up playing classics like Street Fighter, Metal Slug, Sonic, and Super Mario—games with intense combat and platforming. I also loved RPGs like Final Fantasy, Secret of Mana, and Diablo, where you explore, fight monsters, and level up your character. Legends of Dionysos combines the best of both worlds: the speed and excitement of beat ’em ups, with the depth of RPGs, including character progression and loot.
Combat System
The combat system in Legends of Dionysos is unique. Players aren’t restricted to specific classes but can use all weapons.
In Legends of Dionysos, there are no fixed classes. Your skills change based on the weapon you use. As you progress, you get different weapons, each with unique skills and spells. Combat involves switching weapons to adapt to different situations. For example, using a sword and shield might let you heal yourself. Effective combat requires strategic weapon swapping to manage cooldowns and use crowd control, offensive, and defensive spells. The attribute system is also different; all stats benefit you, and your choices depend on how you want to play the game.
Arena Events
The arena events in Legends of Dionysos add extra challenge and excitement. Can you tell us more about how these events work and what rewards players can expect?
Legends of Dionysos has a keystone system similar to Diablo. Throughout the game, you’ll find arenas where you fight waves of enemies followed by a boss. If you survive, you get a guaranteed weapon drop of varying quality. You can replay arenas at different difficulty levels by using a Keystone. Higher-level Keystones mean tougher enemies and bosses but also better loot, more gold, and more experience.
Character Customization
Character customization is a highlight of RPGs but isn’t common in platformers. Can you explain the character customization options in Legends of Dionysos?
In Legends of Dionysos, character customization is purely cosmetic and doesn’t impact gameplay. However, it adds depth and makes each playthrough unique. There are two playable species, humans and cats, with many hair choices and body morphs. You can choose bright, colorful hair tones and create colorful, funny-looking characters if you want to.

The game is designed for hardcore gamers and includes optional hardcore (permadeath) and speedrun modes, with a built-in timer and local high score board.
